ATHENS, Dec. 8 (Xinhua) -- Greek government has decided to hold the country's presidential election next week to put an end to political uncertainty, it was announced on Monday.

Incumbent 85-year old Papoulias' term expires in early March. Under the Greek Constitution the election of his successor should be set a month earlier the latest.
The conservative premier and his socialist coalition partner in a surprise move accelerated the procedure in order to boost the country's position in negotiations with the European Union and International Monetary Fund lenders over cooperation after the end of the Greek bailout program launched in May 2010.
The government had wanted to declare exit from the bailout this December, but due to delays in the final review of the program a two-month extension of the bailout was announced on Monday after a Eurogroup meeting in Brussels.
